The Center for Hearing, Speech and Language Receives Grant to Screen Kids for Hearing, Vision and Developmental Issues
Denver, CO—November 5, 2013— The Center for Hearing, Speech and Language (CHSL), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, with offices located in Denver and Colorado Springs has received a $15,000 grant from RLC Foundation, a donor-advised fund of Rose Community Foundation to support its KidScreen Program, which annually screens over 5,000 low-income, uninsured children ages 7 months to 18 years, where there are no state supported screenings.
Early detection of vision, hearing or developmental issues is critical. If children fall behind at an early age, they have difficulty catching up. Screening is the first step in a prevention, evaluation or intervention process. Screening tests are designed to identify at an early point which children may have learning problems or disabilities that could keep them from realizing their potential.
“The grant from RLC Foundation, a donor-advised fund of Rose Community Foundation will enable us to address quality of life issues for even more kids whose needs cannot be met elsewhere due to their economic circumstances,” said Jill Wayne, Executive Director of CHSL. “CHSL strives to meet the diverse needs of the hearing and communication-impaired population and to increase the potential of every child to do well in school.”
Kidscreen represents a unique opportunity in the Denver Metro area to increase the ability of every child, regardless of income, to succeed in school and later in life, despite having a hearing, vision, speech/language or learning disorder. KidScreen encompasses a comprehensive approach to scholastic preparation for children, and in the process has continued to increase its population and sites, through generous and diverse financial support from private foundations and pay for service. Research has proven that early intervention produces immediate and long-term benefits for young children with disabilities, their families and society.
